Ermel Arthur Hurley, 79, 410 Anel Drive, died Tuesday, March 15, 1994, at Heritage House Convalescent Center. He had been ill for several years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter C. and Lotha Arthur Hurley. He was born on March 3, 1915, in Ray Township, and married Doris Pierce on April 10, 1937.

Hel lived in Morgan County for 30 years, moving from Kokomo and South Bend. He also lived in Japan for four years, Germany for one year, Guam for two years and he taught school in each of these countries through government contracts. He was a retired schoolteacher and principal, having taught in several cities in Indiana, including Kokomo, Hope, Clifford, Martinsville and Brooklyn. He received a master's degree from Butler University. He was a member of the Christian Church in Pendleton.

He was also a veteran of the U. S. Army in World War II, serving from Sept. 2, 1943 through May 29, 1944. Special hobbies included traveling, literature, history, and languages. He was especially fond of Shakespeare. 

He is survived by his wife; five grandchildren, John Hurley, Greenwood, Angie Abraham, Bargersville, Leah Marvel, Apryl Ogden and Alfie Hurley, all of Martinsville; one stepgrandson, Ricky Nix, Martinsville; and seven great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, John A. Hurley, and two sisters, Wanda Grove and Eileen Wright.

Calling will be Thursday at Neal & Summers Chapel from 4 to 6 p.m., and Friday morning from 9 o'clock until time of service. Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Neal & Summers Chapel. The Rev. Don Smith will officiate. Burial will follow at Friendship Park Cemetery in Pargon.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Martinsville Red Cross.
