SOUTH BEND - Joseph J. Hoffer Sr., 79, of Lucinda Street, died at 6:30* p.m. Saturday in his home after an illness. Mr. Hoffer retired in 1965 from Studebaker Corp. after 25 years of service and in 1980 from Indiana Michigan Power Co. as a stationary engineer. He was born June 7, 1915, in South Bend and was a lifelong area resident.

On Jan. 18, 1941, in South Bend, he married Margaret H. Bedi. She survives with three sons, Joseph J. Jr. of Huntington, W.Va., John B. of Chicago and Robert J. of South Bend; five grandchildren; two -grandchildren; and two sisters, Anna Alexander of Detroit and Olga Hoffer of South Bend.

He was a veteran of World War II and a member of Fraternal Order of Elks, Knights of Columbus Council 5521, Ushers Club and St. Jude's Booster Club, both of St. Jude's Catholic Church, and was a Democratic precinct committeeman for 24 years. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Guisinger Colonial Chapel Funeral Home, where a parish rosary will be said at 7 p.m.
