William Theron Couter, 77, of Decatur died 4:55 p.m. Friday (July 16, 1993) in St. Mary’s Hospital. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday in Mount Gilead Cemetery.
Dr. Couter was born Nov. 3, 1915, in LaGrange, Ind., the son of Llewellyn Griffith and Ruth Short Couter. He received a B.A. from Indiana University in 1937 and graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School with a M.D. in 1943. He served in the Army Medical Corps from 1944 to 1946 and was discharged as a major. Serving his internship and residency at University Hospital, Ann Arbor, Mich., in 1943 and 1946 to 1950, he became board certified in internal medicine in 1955. Dr. Couter practiced medicine in Decatur from 1950 to 1987, during which time he served as president of St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Staff in 1966 and president of the Macon County Medical Society in 1976.
He was also a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Macon County Historical Society, Golden K, Decatur Genealogical Society, Civil War Roundtable and American Society of Internal Medicine. He served as director of Family Services, director of the Adolf Meyer Mental Health and Developmental Center in 1965, was a fellow for the American College of Physicians, and also served on the Aging Advisory Committee.
He married Janet N. Naylor on Oct. 2, 1948.
Surviving are his wife; children, John William and wife Beth of Decatur; Cathy and husband Tom of Franklin Park; Nancy of Springfield; Bob and wife Cheri of Chattanooga, Tenn.; four grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister
