Oct. 14, 1925 - Nov. 6, 2011 GRANGER - Kathleen McCaffery Ward, 86, of Granger and Diamond Lake, formerly of South Bend, died Sunday, November 6, 2011, at the Cass County Medical Care Facility, where she had been a resident for over two weeks. Kathleen was born Oct. 14, 1925, in South Bend, to Joseph J. and Loretto (Poulin) McCaffery.

She married Robert B. Ward on August 28, 1948, in South Bend. He preceded her in death in February 1988. She is survived by one son, James R. Ward (Laurel) of Diamond Lake; two granddaughters, Abigail Ward and Rachel Ward of Columbus, Ohio; a sister, Mary Patrice Robertson of Green Valley, AZ; and a brother, James R. McCaffery of South Bend.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Joseph J. McCaffery Jr. Kathleen graduated from Central High School in 1943, attended The University of Wisconsin, and graduated from St. Mary's College in 1948.

She taught kindergarten at Stanley Clark School from 1965 until her retirement in 1995. She served on the board of the South Bend YMCA, Children's Dispensary, Red Cross, and was a past president of the Junior League. But her favorite activity was her "bridge club," a group of very close friendships that span nearly 80 years. Kathleen was a member of the Diamond Lake Yacht Club and until recently never missed a Ladies Luncheon or Saturday Night Cocktail Party. Her favorite place was her summer cottage on Diamond Lake which she had enjoyed since 1938. She loved entertaining family and friends there for over 70 years. Kathleen was a member of Saint Pius X Catholic Church in Granger and attended Saint Ann's Church in Cassopolis in the summer months.

There will be visitation from 4 PM to 7 PM Wednesday, November 9, 2011, at McGann Hay Granger Chapel, 13260 SR 23 (enter off Cherry Road), and a funeral Mass at 10 AM on Thursday at Saint Pius X Catholic Church, 52553 Fir Road, Granger. There will be an hour of visitation before the Mass and a luncheon immediately following. In lieu of flowers, memorials in memory of Kathleen may be sent to Stanley Clark School, 3123 Miami St., South Bend, IN 46614; or to the Christ Child Society of South Bend, PO Box 1226, South Bend, IN 46624.
