Eugene F. Flowers, 75, of Cleveland Road, South Bend, Ind., died following an illness at 12:46 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 30, in Memorial Hospital, South Bend. He was born on March 15, 1924, to the late Floyd and Stella (Bielejewski) Flowers in South Bend, and had remained a lifelong resident.

Mr. Flowers had joined the South Bend Police Department in 1953, and retired in August 1976. He was also employed as a paraprofessional for the South Bend Community School Corporation, mainly as a security officer at Washington High School where he also served as an assistant football coach. Mr. Flowers also officiated wrestling meets for high schools and colleges in the area for many years.

On Dec. 20, 1975, he married Patricia A. McCollough in South Bend. She survives. He is also survived by his son, Keith Flowers of South Bend; a granddaughter, Jennica Flowers of South Bend; a sister, Betty Urban of South Bend; a brother, Richard (Harriet) Flowers of South Bend; five nieces, three nephews, seven great-nieces and six greatnephews.

Mr. Flowers graduated from Central High School in 1943, and attended Kalamazoo College where he played on the football team. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, a member of Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 8748, the South Bend Alumni Association, The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #36, the Washington High School Booster Club, and was a member of the former. American Turners Club, South Bend.

Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 3, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, with Rev. Donald F. Guertin, C.S.C., officiating. Entombment will follow in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today, Feb. 2, in The Kaniewski Funeral Home, where a Rosary will be prayed at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The American Heart Association, Indiana Office, P.O. Box 847, Indianapolis, IN 46206-0847; to the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation, P.O. Box 98136, Washington D.C. 20077-7119; or to the World War II Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 119039, Kansas City, MO.
