Eleanor Margaret “Ellie” Cater Towne

Surrounded by her loving family, Eleanor Margaret (Cater) Towne passed away on Thursday, October 27, 2016. Ellie was a longtime resident of Greenwood, Indiana. The oldest of three children, Ellie was born in Blackwell, Wisconsin on November 23, 1925 to Allen H. and Genevieve C. Cater.

Her brother, Arnold Cater lives in South Bend, Indiana and she is preceded in death by a sister, Jean Ann (Cater) Burkhart.

She was raised at a time when the country was to enter its Great Depression. A time where few were strangers to long, hard work with little pay. The Cater work ethic was therefore, enforced in her early childhood. This attribute, one of many, was generously instilled in each of her children, her children's children and their children as well.

In this world Ellie gave all the people in her journey ninety wonderful years. Whether a family member, friend, or acquaintance, she was always present with her generous heart and valiant support. She spent her formative years in South Bend, Indiana. She worked for Buehler Corporation in Indianapolis, Smith Alsop in Terre Haute and retired from Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis in 2009.

She and her husband traveled the world and lived in Greenwood and Terre Haute where they raised their five children: Cheryle Flynn, William Towne, Thomas Towne, Kelly (Towne) Steele and Valeri (Towne) Torquato. Ellie was a devoted and active member for the past nine years at St. Roch Church, Indianapolis.

Ellie will be remembered for her loving embrace of her Catholic faith, and her family, especially her grandchildren, Michelle Kauffman of Avon, Indiana, Laura Leece of Beech Grove, Indiana, Daniel Reynolds of Greenwood, Indiana, Elizabeth Reiling of Coon Rapids, Iowa, Dylan Steele, Logan Steele, Mason Steele all of McLean, Virginia, thirteen great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

All will remember her sharp wit and her passionate interest in political discourse. She was preceded in death by her son William and her ex-husband Calvin Otto Towne.

She is survived by her brother Arnold, her son Thomas, her daughters and their spouses and her beautiful grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Services have been entrusted to the care of Little and Sons Funeral Home, Beech Grove, Indiana and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
