Velma Edwards (Morin) - Class Of 1947

Velma Edwards (Morin)

VELMA P. (EDWARDS) MORIN

March 1, 1929 - July 18, 2009
MISHAWAKA - Velma P. (Edwards) Morin, 80, of Mishawaka, passed peacefully on July 18, 2009. Her children were at her side. Mrs. Morin was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt who will be missed and remembered for her dedication to and love of her family, her willingness and ability to help those in need, and her love of life and God.

She was born March 1, 1929, in South Bend, IN, to Edward and C. Marie (Allen) Edwards, who both preceded her in death. Her sisters, Jen Davenport, Julie Miller and Marilyn Frame, also preceded her in death.

She was raised in Mishawaka and South Bend and graduated from South Bend Central High School in 1947.

She was first employed by First National Bank & Trust after graduating high school. She met her husband, Robert Morin, who preceded her in death, on a blind date at the old Play Land Park in South Bend. After a short engagement, they were married on February 29, 1948, at Gospel Center Church in River Park, South Bend. They were married for 54 years. After raising her family of eight children, Velma returned to work at Teachers Credit Union where she retired after 20 years of service. She was a member of VFW Post 360 Ladies Auxiliary.

She was an avid puzzle book enthusiast, a novice stamp collector, a lover of gospel music and a collector of bells. A member of America's Greatest Generation, Velma dedicated herself to her family and providing a loving and nurturing home for her children. Her children learned from her the ability to rise to any occasion, face it head on, and to do good deeds throughout life. All who knew her considered Velma to be the most kind, loving, generous and modest woman who would go out of her way to assist those in need and less fortunate, a quality that she lived daily and instilled in all her children and grandchildren. She was a quietly resourceful woman who was always the first to listen and then provide guidance and support to those with whom she came into contact in life. She will long be remembered for saying what was necessary and always doing so in her gentle yet compelling way.

She is survived by her eight children, Sherri (David) Cheney of Osceola, Alaine (Mike) Morin-Bryan of Mishawaka, Robert (Judy) Morin II of South Bend, Ronald (Elizabeth) Morin of Mooresville, Raymon Morin of South Bend, Randal Morin, Rodney (Melissa) Morin and Roland Morin, all of Mishawaka. Grandma was a dedicated and loving grandmother to her nine grandsons, JD (Dana) Cheney, John Cheney, Michah Bryan, Asher Morin, Ron Scot Morin, Randy Morin II, Richard Morin, Matthew (Amber) Morin and Doug Morin; and eight granddaughters, Aimee (Peter) Malawi, Arielle Morin, Tirzah Morin, Marci (Ro) Lopez, Katelynn Morin, Rebecca Nijak, Tiffany Morin and Stephanie Morin. She was also the proudest of great-grandmothers to Anthony, Cameron and Campbell Cheney, Ethan and Elisha Clayton, Payton Malow, Breanne Morin and Abby Morin. She is also survived by brothers, Jack (Martha) Salisbury and Robert Salisbury, a sister, Marti Salisbury, and her brother-in-law, John Davenport.

Arrangements are being handled by the Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910 N. Main St., Mishawaka, with visitation from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 21, 2009. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday morning, July 22, 2009, in the funeral chapel, with interment to follow at Fairview Cemetery in Mishawaka.
