February 11, 1936 ~ June 25, 2025 (age 89)
Raymond D. Sherman, Jr., a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at 6:12 am on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, in his home surrounded by his loving family. Born on February 11, 1936, in South Bend, IN, Raymond's life was marked by dedication, love, and a remarkable talent for all things mechanical.
Raymond's journey began as the son of the late Raymond D. Sherman, Sr. and Ila (Bordner) Quick. He grew up alongside his siblings, the late Bob (Deanna) Sherman, Sharon (Jim) Dill, and Beverly Quick, in a home that was always bustling with activity and warmth. His early years in South Bend laid the foundation for a life full of love, hard work, and service.
In December of 1959, Raymond married the love of his life, Denise (Fritz), and together they embarked on a journey that would span over 65 years. Their union was blessed with two children, Lori (Brian Deneen) Ray and Dennis (Teresa) Sherman, who in turn filled Raymond's life with joy through their own families. He was a proud grandfather to Dennis Sherman, Jr., Dustin Sherman, Blythe Carlson, and Dylan Carlson, and a doting great-grandfather to Dominic, Leim, Abryana, Hayden, Alyssa, Bruce Sleman, and Maya Carlson-Smyers. His family was the cornerstone of his life, and he cherished every moment spent with them.
Raymond honorably served in the United States Army, a testament to his commitment to his country and the values he held dear. After his service, he found his calling as a body shop painter at Wheelhorse, where he worked until his retirement in 1992. His passion for cars was not just a job but a lifelong hobby. Raymond was known for his incredible ability to buy, fix up, and sell cars, having worked on hundreds of vehicles over the years. His hands were rarely clean, but they were always skilled.
Beyond his work, Raymond had a zest for life and a variety of interests. He was an avid camper, finding solace and joy in the great outdoors. His love for crafting extended to model airplanes and creating lights for campers, bringing his meticulous touch and creativity to each project. These hobbies were more than pastimes; they were extensions of his love for life and the people in it.
Raymond's legacy is one of love, service, and craftsmanship. He leaves behind a family that adores him and a community that respects him. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him, and his influence will continue to be felt long after his passing.
The Palmer Funeral Home - River Park Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. As per Raymond's wishes, there will be no services at this time. His life will be celebrated privately by his family, who take comfort in the knowledge that he lived a full and happy life, marked by the love and respect of those he touched. Raymond D. Sherman, Jr. will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of his family and friends forever.
