Paul Gilbert, a 26-year Chappaqua resident. who spent 45 years in the publishing business, died of heart failure on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 1997, at his home. He was 83. He was born Aug. 19, 1913, in South Bend, Ind., where he was raised and educated.As a young man during the Great Depression, he traveled the United States by rail as a hobo. he taught accordion and headed his own orchestra, called Stardusters, in South Bend.
During the 1930s, Mr. was editor and publisher newspaper in South Bend.
He was drafted by the U.S. Army shortly before the break of World War II and stationed in Pearl Harbor, where he was on duty when the Japanese attacked on Dec. 7, 1941. During a furlough, he married Marvelle Gilbert, in Indianapolis on Jan. 13, 1945. They lived in Chicago after the war while Mr. Gilbert attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. In 1951, they moved to Queens, Mr. Gilbert became a publishers' representative - a person who procures advertisements for small magazines. He continued working until the end of his life.
Mr. Gilbert was known for his friendliness, helpfulness and pragmatic approach to life, his wife said, adding he had a knack for making people feel better after talking to him.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Glenn Gilbert of Mount Kisco, and Richard Gilbert of Manhattan; and a sister, Sara Thomas of Naples, Fla.
The Omega Funeral Service in Elmsford is handling the cremation. No funeral is planned.
