SOUTH BEND - LaMar Thomas "Tom" Smith, 66, of 57262 Poppy Road, died at 1:15 p.m Saturday at Memorial Hospital after an illness. He retired from South Bend School Corp.'s athletic maintenance department. He was born Feb. 14, 1928, in South Bend, and was a lifetime area resident.
On Oct. 29, 1954, in South Bend, he married Cherrie Kay Poland. She died Aug. 17, 1982. On Feb. 12, 1988, in South Bend, he married Joyce Shue Birk. She sururvives with a daughter, Deborah Sherwood of South Bend; a son, David Smith of Tucson, Ariz.; two stepdaughters, Diana Sobecki of Granger and Carrie Hurd of Louisville, N.C.; three grandchildren; five step grandchildren; and two brothers. Claude and William, both of South Bend.
He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, South Bend Bowling Hall of Fame and South Bend Bowling Association, where he served as parliamentarian. He also served as softball commissioner for Protestant churches for 31 years. He was a Korean War veteran. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the church.
Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William St. Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
