Donna Marie Smith

SOUTH BEND – Donna Marie Smith, 85, passed away at 6:40 AM Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at "Your Home" Assisted Living in South Bend, Indiana.

Donna was born on July 29, 1928 in South Bend to the late Fremont and Martha (Travis) Patterson and has been a lifelong resident of this area, graduating from South Bend Central High School.

On June 30, 1955 in South Bend, she was united in marriage to Richard T. Smith, who preceded her in death on May 2, 2013. Donna was also preceded in death by her granddaughter, Chelsea Taljaard, and her brother, Dean Patterson.

Donna was an Administrative Secretary for the Dean of Business at the University of Notre Dame for 15 years, retiring in 1994. She was a member of St. Paul's Memorial United Methodist Church, South Bend and a member of the Order of Eastern Star. She was a supporter of the SIDS Foundation and several Animal Rescue organizations. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the Center of Hospice caregivers, especially to Betsy, Bonnie and Vicki. Also, many thanks to the caregivers at "Your Home" for your wonderful care and compassion.

Donna is survived by her daughter, Karen (Bob Guthrie) Smith-Taljaard of South Bend; son, Kevin S. Smith of Whiteland, IN; grandchildren, Chandler and Bailey Smith, Spencer and Tara Taljaard; step-grandchildren, Alicia and Ty Goble; and a special cousin, Cherrie Travis.

Funeral services for Donna Smith will be held at 6:00 PM Thursday, May 29, 2014 at Palmer Funeral Home – River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend, with two hours of visitation prior. Roberta Spencer and Steve Nani will officiate. Private burial will take place at Highland Cemetery, South Bend.
