Services for Dr. Richard L. Huffer, 62, chief of staff at John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Indio, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Family Heritage Church on Miles Avenue in La Quinta. Dr. Huffer, a native of South Bend, Ind., died Saturday at his home in La Quinta. A graduate of the Indiana Uni'versity School of Medicine, he had been in medicine for 32 years. He was a member of the United States Air Force and was a division surgeon with the 27th Air Division at Norton Air Force Base in San Bernardino.

He began his private practice in Indio in 1959. He was on the governing board of John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital for six years and served as secretary-treasurer for five terms. He was elected to the board of governors of the hospital in July 1990.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara C. Huffer; his mother, Ruth Huffer House of Indio; five daughters, Heidi Conner of Indianapolis; Tracy Huffer of Albuquerque, N.M.; Kathryn Miller of La Quinta: Kimberly Roberge of Cathedral City and Candace Torrence of San Diego; two sons, Barry Huffer of Reseda and Mark Torrence of Desert Hot Springs, a sister, June Lesher of Tucson, Ariz.: and seven grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the FitzHenry Funeral Home Chapel in Indio. Burial will be at Coachella Valley Cemetery in Coachella.
