Arthur J. Sumption
Jun 23, 1916 - May 27, 1987
Arthur J. Sumption, 70, of 19238 Cleveland Road, who was active in scouting and whose great-great-grandfather, George Sumption, founded Sumption Prairie Cemetery, died Friday in his home after an illness.
Mr. Sumption was a past president of the Tri Valley Council of the Boy Scouts. In 1962, he was appointed chairman of Scout-O-Rama. He was also the recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. He was past president of the South Bend Rotary Club, president of the South Bend Golf Association, president of Burkes Golf Association of Notre Dame, and a member of Central High School Alumni Association.
In 1972, Mr. Sumption was named the residential chairman for the St. Joseph County Unit, American Cancer Society. Memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association or to the charity of the donor's choice. He was a floral designer and comanager for Williams Florist for many years.
He retired from Rose Fuels following 10 years of service.
He was born on June 23, 1916, in South Bend and he lived in the area all of his life.
On Oct. 21, 1939, in South Bend he married Ila Williams, who died on July 6, 1985.
Surviving are two sons, James A. of South Bend and Robert A. of Diamond Lake, Mich.; five grandchildren; a sister, Geraldine Persyn of Poland, Ind.; and a brother, Jack of Eagle Lake, Mich.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Sacred Heart Church in Notre Dame. Burial will be in Sumption Prairie Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today in the Hickey Funeral Home, 17131 Cleveland Road, where a parish rosary is scheduled at 7:30 p.m. He was a member of the church.
