Mary Gertrude (Helton) Seiler
July 25, 1915 – Nov. 16, 2008

MISHAWAKA — Mary Gertrude Seller, 93, was surrounded by her loving family the night she went home to be with her Lord. She passed from this world to the next on the evening of November 16, 2008.

Mary was born on July 25, 1916 in Mishawaka Indiana. She lived in Mishawaka her whole life. She married John J Seiler in 1935, and they were married 63 years before he passed away on June 10, 1998, and that was a great loss to the family.

Mary graduated from Central High School in 1934. She had three children. Jacqueline Metzler, Jerry Seiler and Jesse Seiler. There are seven grandchildren, Jolayne Soplanda , of Alaska, Jonnie Banks, Todd Seiler, Angie Seiler and Jerry Seiler. Jessica Seiler and Nicholas Seiler. She also has 12 great-grandchildren and four great-great- grandchildren.

Mary was the first woman to ever swim in the Notre Dame pool. She was hired to teach nuns and others to swim and dive. She worked for the Red Cross as driver for the Motor Corps during World War II. Later the family owned and operated the Golf Mor Practice Range, where K Mart and Gates are now sitting on Grape Road and US 20. She and her husband also owned the Helsi Kennel and raised German Shepherds. She was president of the Four Lakes Women Golf League for several years, a member of North Indiana Artist Association, Salvation Army, and St Joseph Hospital Auxiliary for 36 years.

Friends may visit with the family from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Nov. 19th, in the Bubb funeral Chapel, 3010 N Main St . Funeral Services celebrating Mary's life will be held in the Funeral Chapel at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov 20th, with an hour of visitation prior to the services.
