William John Widmar

William John "Bill" Widmar, 80, of South 23rd St., South Bend, Ind., passed away at 8:50 a.m. Friday, Dec. 6, in Regency Place Healthcare &  Rehabilitation Center, following a 2 1/2 month illness.

Mr. Widmar was born to George and Stella (Knoblock) Widmar on Jan. 18, 1916, in Bremen, Ind., and remained a lifelong area resident. He was the former owner and operator of Widmar Food Shop, on 1 East Howard Street, for 28 years.

On April 22, 1939, in Lowell Heights United Methodist Church, he married the former Dorothy Mae Hutson. He is survived by his wife of 57 years; two daughters, Judy Malling of Mishawaka, Ind., and Karen Belledin of Henderson, Nev; four grandchildren; and four greatgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Widmar.

Mr. Widmar was a member and former deacon of the First Christian Church, and past president of the Fellowship Class. He was a 50 year member of South Bend Masonic Lodge 294, F&AM; a 50 year member of Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend, Orak Shrine, Michigan City; the South Bend Shrine Club; and was a driver for the Shriner's Hospital for Children, Chicago.

He was also a member of the Four Lakes Country Club and the Gulf Shrine Club, Holmes Beach, Fla. He was a member and past president of the International Grocery Association, and served in the Indiana National Guard.

Services for Mr. Widmar will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 9, in the First Christian Church, 1101 E. Jefferson Blvd. Rev. William J. Wassner, pastor, will officiate.  Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, Ind. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Hollis-OrvisPalmer Funeral Home, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., where a Masonic memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to services Monday, at the church.
