Henry. A. Versmesse, 84, of St. Joseph Care Center-West, formerly of South Illinois Street, South Bend, Ind., passed away at 6:35 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3, in the care center.

Mr. Versmesse was born on Nov. 27, 1915, in South Bend, and was a lifelong area resident. He retired as a supervisor at RACO on Feb. 3, 1978, where he had been employed for 43 years.

On June 26, 1942, in South Bend, he married Erma P. Dhaene, who died on May 17, 1993.

He is survived by a daughter, Shirley (Neil) Walter of South Bend; three sons, Larry Versmesse of New Carlisle, Ind., Gerald (Susan) Versmesse of New Carlisle and Michael (Valerie) Versmesse of South Bend; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; and by a sister, Elsie (Russel) Hodge of Mesa, Ariz.

Mr. Versmesse was a World War Il Navy veteran. He was a member of American Legion Post 284, Shipmates of the U.S.S. Alaska, and the RACO Retirees Club. 

A Mass of Christian Burial be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 9, in Corpus Christi Church. Entombment will follow in Riverview Cemetery, where members of American Legion Post 284 will conduct military services. Friends may call from 1 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m.on Wednesday, Dec. 8, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, where a parish Rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m., and may also call from one hour prior to services on Thursday at Corpus Christi Church.
