SOUTH BEND Norman E. Smith, 73, of 732 N. Hill St., died about 11:15 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Smith was employed by Indiana Michigan Electric Co. for more than 40 years. He was born Sept. 7, 1916, in South Bend, and was a lifelong area resident.
On Jan. 16, 1946, in South Bend, he married Betty Jean Payton. She survives along with a daughter, Judy Saros of Kalamazoo; two sons, Richard K. of Jacksonville, Ill., and Dan J. of Grand Junction, Colo.; and eight grandchildren.
He was a veteran of World War II and member of St. Paul's Memorial United Methodist Church. He was employed by Civilian Conservation Corps. before joining the Navy.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Forest G. Hay Funeral Home, 435 S. Ironwood Drive. Burial will be at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
