Howard Mercer Smith, 49. of 1020 Clover St., died Sunday in Memorial Hospital after an illness of two years. He was born at Crystal Lake, Ill.. on June 9, 1915. He had been employed at the Bendix Corp. for 30 years.
Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Hazel Smith, two brothers, Robert J. and Edward B., all of South Bend.
Friends may call after 7 p.m. today at the Hollis Funeral Home. Services will be held there at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. Rev. C. Franklin Bruce, pastor of Ridgedale Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park.
He was a veteran of World War If.
Pallbearers will be John Kuharich, Edgar Kavanaugh, Clarence McGill, James Lower, Maynard Erickson and William Waddell.
