Martin A. Schreyer

Martin (Marty) Schreyer, all-state center on Central High School's 1933 Northern Indiana Conference championship football team, died Monday at his home in Logansport. His brother, John Schreyer, of Sancome St., said death was due to hemorrhaging.

Schreyer, 48, was a Logansport businessman who captained the Purdue University football team in 1937 and gained national and Big Ten fame as a tackle. He was on honorable mention lists of several national teams that year and in 1938 received the Big Ten Medal of Honor for showing the greatest proficiency as a scholar and athlete. Schreyer played in the Chicago Tribune's annual College All-Star game in Soldier Field in 1938.

Schreyer actually played only one season of varsity ball at Central High, making the team in his senior year after a season of B-team competition. As a sophomore, he was considered too small. During his senior year, Central won the Northern Conference's eastern division crown and then defeated western winner Whiting, 14-13, for the overall conference championship.

Schreyer is survived by the widow, three sons, Martin A. Jr. of Fort Wayne and Michael and Joseph, both at home; a daughter. JoAnne, also at home; his mother, Mrs. Martin Schreyer of South Bend; his brother John and a sister, Mrs. Ann Kush, also of South Bend.

He was born South Bend on Dec. 7, 1916.

The body is in the Kroger Funeral Home, Logansport. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Vincent's Catholic Church, with Msgr. John P. Schall officiating.

He was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and was a member of the church.

Martin A. Schreyer, 48, of 2900 E. Broadway, died at 11 a.m. Monday at his residence after a long illness. He was the owner of Marty's Sales and Service and Culligan Soft-Water Service.

He had also been connected with severai other local business firms in the past. An outstanding athlete during his college days at Purdue University, he was named All-America tackle in 1937. He served as captain of the football team for Purdue, where he was graduated in 1938. A native of South Bend, he was born Dec. 7, 1916, the son of Martin and Elizabeth Lebner Schreyer.

His marriage Aug. 9, 1938, in Lafayette was to Josephine Perkins. He was a former president off the local Chamber of Commerce and a member of • the Elks Lodge, Eagles Lodge, Holy Name Society, Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree, Rotary Club, Delta Upsilon fraternity, and St. Vincent's Catholic church. Surviving are his wife; his mother of South Bend; three sons, Martin A.

Jr. of Fort Wayne; Michael, at home, and Joseph of 3117 Crescent Ave.; a daughter, Joanne, at home; a brother, John of South Bend, and a sister, Mrs. Ann Kush of South Bend. Rites are pending at the Kroger funeral home.

Eagles services will be at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, followed by Elks services at 8 p.m. Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus will stand guard from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Kroger funeral home where friends may call. St. Theresa's Study Club will hold services at the funeral home at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
