George J Rumpf - Class Of 1934 VIEW PROFILE

George J Rumpf

George John Rumpf Jr.

May 24, 1916 - Nov 5, 2001

George, Jr. was in high school when his parents moved to South Bend, IN in 1932 so his father, an electrotyper by trade, could work for Apex Electrotype Foundry, a company co-founded by the father's older brother, Louis.

Upon high school graduation, George started his own electrotyping career at Apex. He and Maxine were married on Oct 5, 1940 at Saint Patrick's Rectory (Catholic) in South Bend. They would become the parents of three sons, one now deceased.

Sometime around 1950, George bought Apex. By the mid-1950s, however, offset printing was replacing electrotyping and by 1970, he had to close the doors after a 28-year career.

Fortunately, George was able to find work with National Standard Co. of Niles, Michigan which made steel belts for the rubber tire industry. He continued to live in South Bend while commuting to work for the short distance across the state line. He retired in 1981 at the age of 65.

He enjoyed 20 years of retirement before his passing at age 85 in 2001. His wife predeceased him by one year.
