Ambrose Iziah Rice

PFC Ambrose I. Rice served with Fox Company, Second Battalion, 1st Marines. He was killed in action at Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, on 14 September 1942.

Mr. and Mrs. Ambrose I. Rice, 1407 East Lasalle avenue, have been notified by the department that they, are to receive the purple heart medal awarded posthumously to their son, Private (f. c.) Ambrose, jr., of the United States marine corps, killed in action on Guadalcanal island.

Private Rice was with the division of marines which stormed ashore and gained a toehold from which American fighting men were ultimately able to wrest control of the Solomon islands from the Japanese. He died of wounds Sept. 14, 1942, at the age of 27. He enlisted Jan. 5, 1942.

A letter signed by Secretary of Navy Frank Knox informed the parents they were entitled to the presidential unit citation awarded to the first marine division for service against the enemy in the Solomon island group and that they were eligible also to the Asiatic-Pacific campaign medal which would have gone to their son had he lived.
