SOUTH BEND - Elsie V. Hughes, 79, of Meridian Nursing Center-Cardinal, died at 1:20 p.m. Sunday in Memorial Hospital after an illness. Miss Hughes retired from Abstract & Title Co. of St. Joseph County after 25 years of service.

She was born Oct. 15, 1915, in Rockwood, Tenn., and lived in South Bend since 1929.

She is survived by a friend, Sue Opfer of South Bend; two nieces, Betty Stevens of California and Najoma Crow of Warm Springs, Ark; and a nephew, Warren E. Dyer of California.

She was a member of Beta Sigma Pi Sorority, Ladies Missionary Circle of Calvary Baptist Church, and Woodmen of the World Indiana Lodge 6001
