MANSFIELD: Kathryn M. "Kay" Sheadel, 86, of Elmridge Road, Mansfield, died Friday morning September 3, 2004 in MedCentral Mansfield Hospital following a short illness.

She was born October 5, 1917 in Elkhart, Indiana to Roy and Marie (Lambert) Fries, and moved to South Bend, Indiana during the first year of her life and grew up there.

She was graduated from Central High School in 1934 and from North Central College in Naperville, Illinois in 1938.

She taught in Eaton Rapids, Michigan from 1938 to 1943 and worked from 1943 to 1945 in the Engineering Department of the Studebaker Corporation in South Bend.

Kay lived in Barberton from 1946 to 1967, when she moved to Mansfield. She taught eight years with Barberton City Schools, and then taught math at Mansfield City Schools' Johnny Appleseed Junior High until 1978.

She was a member of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association, State and National Educational Associations, and served as treasurer of AAUW, Women's Club, and The League of Women Voters.

Kay was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Mansfield, where she had served the congregation as deacon, elder and the first chairperson of the Stewardship Committee. She was one of the founding members of the church's Stephen Ministry and had previously sung in the choir.

Beyond her many and varied interests, Kay's genuine passions in life revolved around her family, her work for her church, and the Mansfield Federation of Women.

She is survived by her husband John, whom she married July 28, 1945; their children and their spouses, James B. and Debbie, Ann and her husband Stephen, Jean, and Michael; six grandchildren, John, Sara, Jasen, Mark, Robert, and Michael; a great grandson, Trevor; and a sister, Florence.

A brother, Roy L. Fries preceded her in death.

The family will receive friends Monday, September 6, 2004 from 4-6 pm in the Parlor of First Presbyterian Church, 399 South Trimble Road. The funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 am in the church sanctuary. The Rev. Dennis R. Allison and the Rev. Dr. David Hartzfeld will officiate. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park. The Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements.
