James R. Hertel

SOUTH BEND Services for James R. Hertel, 83, of Arthur Street and also of Simonton Lake, Elkhart, who died at 3:35 p.m. Thursday in Memorial Hospital, will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William St. Burial will be in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to IOOF.

Mr. Hertel retired in 1966 as a police officer for the city of South Bend after 24 years of service. He was born April 28, 1911, in South Bend, and was a lifelong area resident.

On April 14, 1935, in South Bend, he married Ruth A. Schermerhorn. She survives with a daughter, Lois Overton of Delaware, Ohio; two granddaughters; one great grandson; and two brothers, Morris of Three Rivers and Herbert of South Bend.

He was a member of FOP Lodge 36 and Robert Blum 100F Lodge 278
