Dr. Ray Firestein

SOUTH BEND - Dr. Ray Firestein, 77, who played a part in the establishment of the coronary care unit at St. Joseph's Medical Center, died at 3:40 p.m. Monday in the medical center. The unit was established at the hospital in 1967, and was the first coronary care unit in the area.
Dr. Firestein of 502 N. Ironwood Drive, retired in 1972 from internal medicine, and he also served as the director of the coronary care unit at the hospital. In 1974, he received the hospital's Golden Apple Award for outstanding service.
He was born Jan. 30, 1913, in South Bend and was a lifelong area resident.
On Sept. 5, 1940, in Indianapolis, he married Eleanor Rodin. She survives, with three daughters, Judith Shroyer of South Bend, and Janice and Rose Firestein, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a son, Peter of New York City; and two grandchildren. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and was a Bronze Star recipient.
He was the founder and first director of the coronary care unit, and was past director of the Electrocardiogram Department, all at St. Joseph's Medical Center. He also served on the staffs of both St. Joseph's Medical Center and Memorial Hospital. He graduated from Indiana University Medical School in 1941, served his residency at Cook County Hospital, Chicago, where received a fellowship in hematology from 1952-53 and was board certified in internal medicine.
He was a member of the American Medical Association, St. Joseph County Medical Association, Indiana Medical Association, New York Academy of Sciences. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Hebrew Orthodox Cemetery, Mishawaka. Burial will follow.
There will be no visitation.
