Edward J. Nowak

SOUTH BEND Edward J. Nowak, 81, of 3131 Wilder Drive, died at 11:30 a.m. Thursday in his home after an illness. Mr. Nowak retired 1963 from the South Bend Police Department as a detective after 22 years of service and was employed for 13 years at Parkview Juvenile Center as a probation officer.
He was born April 25, 1912, in South Bend and was a lifelong area resident.
On April 20, 1944, in South Bend, he married Virginia Doran. She survives, with two daughters, Mary Ellen Rowe of Granger and Christine Nowak of South Bend; two sons, Thomas E. of Granger and Daniel D. of Edwardsburg; seven grandchildren; and three sisters, Gertrude Ireland of Skokie, Ill., Beatrice Filley and Katherine Pletcher, both of Niles.
He was a member of St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 36, and was a veteran of World War II.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the church. Cremation will take place. There will be no visitation. McGann Funeral Home is in charge arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Joseph County Inc. or St. Vincent de Paul Society.
