Long-time county official dead at 69
Emery L. Hirschler, 69, of 19539 Greenacre, well-known South Bend political figure, died early Wednesday in his home after an extended illness. Hirschler began his government. career in 1934 as a deputy county assessor and retired after 45 continuous years of employment in county and township governments. Upon his retirement he was credited for innovating and refining the techniques used by the county for accurate recording of properties and boundary lines.
Hirschler served as chief deputy county auditor for eight years, beginning in 1939. He then served five years as chief real estate deputy and was county recorder from 1952 to 1960. He was employed for an additional four years as chief deputy county records officer and later in the county auditor's office. He also served in the voter registration office and the Portage Twp. Assessor's office.
He retired in 1979 as the chief deputy real estate auditor. He was born on Jan. 5, 1914, in South Bend and was a lifetime area resident.
Oct. 19, 1940, in South Bend, he married the former Mary Szabo.
She survives along with two sons, Emery L. and John P., both of South Bend; three grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Joan Reitz of Benton Harbor.
Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. today in the Welsheimer North Chapel, 52803 U.S. 33 N., where a rosary will be recited at 7. p.m. today. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. He was a member of King Catholic Church.
