Joseph G. Ettl
April 23, 1913 - June 17, 1998
Joseph G. Ettl, 85, of Indiana 23, South Bend, Ind., died following a short illness at 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 17, 1998, in Memorial Hospital, South Bend. Etti was born on April 23, 1913, in South Bend, to Michael Elizabeth (Bruck) Ettl, and a lifetime area resident.
He preceded in death by his parents and by three sisters and two brothers.
On Dec. 31, 1943, in Columbus, Ga., he married Madeline R. Graf, survives. is also survived by a daughter, Barbara Ettl of Indianapolis, three sons, Frederick "Fritz" (Julie) EttI of Mishawaka, Ind., Joseph G. "Jay" (D'Anne) Ettl of Muncie, Ind., and Gregory M. (Emmy) Ettl of South Bend; seven grandchildren, Carmen, Frederick "Fritz," Steven, T.J., Andrew, Mia Adam Ettl; and by a daughter-in-law, Piedad Rodriguez Ettl of South Bend.
Ettl was a graduate of South Bend Central High School and earned a B.S. and J.D. from University, Bloomington, he also earned a varsity letter in wrestling, and was a member of the team that won the national championship.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II where he attained the rank of major. In 1964 he ran for President of the United States on the Republican ticket. Ettl served as president of St. Joseph County Bar Association, Goodwill, Jaycees, and the South Side Little League. He was a member of the Veterans Foreign Wars, American Legion, Delta Upsilon Fraternity, St. Joseph County Bar Association, the Calvert Rod and Gun Portage Lodge No. 675 F & AM, Scottish Rite Valley of South Orak Shrine Temple, Avalon Grotto, Elks Lodge 235, Bowler's Country Club. He also a former trustee of Northern Indiana Historical Society, served on the St. Joseph County Zoning Board, was city county attorney, and served as attorney for the Greene Township Expansion Project.
Friends may call from noon to p.m. on Saturday in Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 William Street, South Bend. Cremation will take place Michiana Crematory, South Bend.
