Margaret E. (Cook) Stewart

April 8, 1914 - March 6, 1998 SOUTH BEND Margaret E. Stewart, 83, of Montrose Drive, South Bend, Ind., passed away after an extended illness at 8:20 p.m. on Friday, March 6, in the St. Joseph Medical Center. Mrs. Stewart was born on April 8, 1914, in Rochester, Ind., and was a lifetime resident of the Michiana area.

On Sept. 11, 1935, in South Bend, she married Charles L. Stewart, who survives. Mrs. Stewart was very proud of having been married for 62 wonderful years. Margaret is also survived by a daughter, Sharon A. (Melvin) Mathews of Beaverton, Ore., and two wonderful, loving grandsons, Craig and Jeff Jarrett of Portland, Ore.

Mrs. Stewart retired in 1965 as a bookkeeper for several local companies. Margaret was presented the Meritorious Hoosier Award in 1985, for exceptional contributions and service as a citizen of the great state of Indiana, by then Secretary of State, Edwin Simcox. Mrs. Stewart was a member of Southlawn United Methodist Church, South Bend, the Bowling Hall of Fame, and was a past member of the Order of Eastern Star.

Visitation hours will be from 9 to 11 a.m. on Monday at the Hanley & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home, located at West Ireland Road and Indiana 23. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday in the funeral home, with Pastor Craig Clapper officiating. The final resting place will be Highland Mausoleum.

The family request that all memorial contributions be made to the St. Joseph County Cancer Society or to the St. Joseph County Heart Association.
