Oliver J. Chayie

Oliver J. Chayie, 87, died following an extended illness, on Thursday, July 15, 1999 while living in Castro Valley, CA. He was born to the late Ebal and Angeline Chayie on June 19, 1912 in Calumet, MI. The family settled in the South Bend, IN area several years later.

As a youth he was the first Eagle Scout of South Bend. He resided primarily in the local area until his 1944 marriage to Dora E. Stearly, 55 years ago. He and his family resided in both the South Bend area and Detroit, MI for many years until retiring to Arizona, and later to California. During his years in Michigan he was a Past Exhaulted Ruler of the Clawson-Troy Elks.

Lodge in Clawson, MI. In 1977, he retired from Giffle Design and Engineering Company, and then in 1979, he retired from Ford Motor Company.

He is survived by his wife, Dora Ellen; two daughters, Jeannine and Carol Lynn; four grandchildren; and four sisters of the South Bend and Mishawaka area, Ernestine Kaniewski-Rypniewski of South Bend, IN; Loretta (John) Murrmann of South Bend, IN; Juliette Maggart of Mishawaka, IN; and Philanese Miles of Mishawaka, IN.

He was preceded in death by his son, Adrian Chayie.

Private services are being held in Castro Valley, CA where he will be cremated. Kaniewski Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.
