Dr Lester D. Borough

Dr. Lester D. Borough, 57, of 816 E. Woodside St., a prominent South Bend psychiatrist, died at 6:10 a.m. today in Memorial Hospital following a two year illness.

Dr. Borough had practiced psychiatry and neurology in South Bend since 1945. Active in civic and professional organizations, he had served in the Army as chief of staff in psychiatry, during and neurology World at War II prior to going into private practice.

He was born on Dec. 2, 1913, in North Manchester and came to South Bend in 1916. He was a graduate of Central High School and the Indiana University Medical School. He served his neurological residency at the Neurological Institute in New York City. 

He was a member of various local, state and national professional societies and a charter member of the American Medical Electroencephalographic Assn. In May he was awarded a life fellowship in psychiatry.

He also was a member of the Rotary Club, the Indiana Club, the South Bend Art Center, the Northern Indiana Historical Society: Southold Restoration, in Inc., Beta Alpha chapter of Delta Tau Delta fraternity, Phi Chi medical fraternity, and the St. Joseph Valley Walter Color Society.

He is survived by his widow, the former Mrs. Frank C. Perkins; a daughter, Mrs. Thomas A. Kragh of Mishawaka; three sons, Richard and David Borough, both of San Jose, Calif., and Frederick S. Perkins of South Bend; three grandchildren; his mother, Mrs. James Kelley of South Bend; and two brothers, Dr. Paul Borough and William Borough, both of South Bend.

His first wife, the former Sara Paris, died in 1954.

Services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the Forest G. Hay and Son Funeral Home with Rev. Forest Howpastor of the Grace United Methodist Church, and Rev. Eugene R. Balsley, senior pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 9 p.m. Saturday.

Burial will be in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park. The family requests contributions be made to the Psychiatric Department of Memorial Hospital or the South Bend Medical Foundation.
