Martha Jane Garges Loses Life; Others Are Injured.
The Tribune's Special Service. NEW BUFFALO, Mich., June 2.
Two persons, one of whom was Mrs. Martha Jane Garges, aged 24, South Bend, lost their lives in automobile accidents Sunday and a number of persons were injured. The other fatality was Henry Reitz, 28, Three Oaks, Mich.
Mrs. Garges, wife of Grover C. Garges, jr., 319 South Lafayette boulevard, was injured fatally at 6 p. m. on U. S. highway No. 12, one mile north of the New Buffalo state police post. A car being driven north by Miss Ruth Wilhelm, of Chicago, pulled out of traffic to avoid hitting another car going south and crashed head-on into the automobile being driven south by Mr. Garges.
Riding with Mr. and Mrs. Garges were Chester Simcox, 1807 South Fellows street, South Bend, who suffered shock and bruises; Mrs. Simcox, fracture of one leg, and their small daughter, suffered minor injuries. Mrs. Olive Colberg, riding in the Wilhelm automobile, suffered cuts and bruises as did Miss Wilhelm. Both reside in Chicago.
The body of Mrs. Garges was taken to the Smith funeral home in New Buffalo and will moved Tuesday noon to the Welsheimer funeral home in South Bend.
Mrs. Garges was born April 21, 1917, in South Bend.
Surviving are her husband and her mother, Mrs. Delia Virgo, of the Lafayette boulevard. Mrs. Garges was graduated from Central High School here in 1936. She was a member of First Evangelical church.
Mr. Garges is in a serious condition in St. Anthony hospital, Michigan City.
