Robert H. Veith, 82, of Hummingbird Drive, South Bend, Ind., died at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, July 28, in Memorial Hospital of injuries sustained in an automobile/motorcycle accident.

Mr. Veith was born Aug. 4, 1918, in South Bend, to Henry  and Emma (Bucholtz) Veith, and was a lifetime area resident. On Sept. 2, 1944, in Corpus Christi, Texas, he married Helen M. Ruppert, who preceded him in death on June 25, 1998.

On Oct. 28, 2000, in South Bend, he married Jackie Bates, who survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Judie (Dave) Apt of Rochester, Ind,; two sons, Thomas R. (Patty Overdorf) Veith of Cicero, and Robert H. Veith of Indianapolis, Ind.; three grandchildren, Jamie Veith, and Jim and Brian Apt; one great-grandson, Kyle Apt; three stepdaughters, Cindy (John) Schuler of Rolling Prairie, Ind., Carmen Olds of Knox, Ind., and Kimberly (Russell) Lavine of South Bend; one stepson, Gene (Katie) Bates of New Carlisle, Ind.; and by a sister, Louise Nye of South Bend.

Mr. Veith retired from AlliedSignal as a supervisor in the pattern shop after 33 years of service. He then worked for the City Pattern and Foundry Company for eight years. He was a member of Bendix Retirees, Lydick Lions Club, and Epworth Memorial United Methodist Church where he was very active in many activities and was a member for over 50 years.

Woodworking was one of his favorite pastimes and he enjoyed making items out of wood for church bazaars, and for his friends and family. He also enjoyed the outdoors and especially fishing. He was a graduate of South Bend Central High School where he excelled on the swim team.

He was a veteran of the Army Air Corps during World War II.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m Friday, Aug. 3, in the Epworth  Memorial United Methodist Church, with Rev. Steven Brey officiating. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today in the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William Street. Memorial contributions may be made to the Epworth Memorial United Methodist Church, 2404 Lincoln Way West, South Bend, IN 46628; to the Lydick United Methodist Church, Faith Lift 2001, 26510 Edison Road, South Bend, IN 46628; to the Lydick Lions Club; or to the Warren Township Volunteer Fire Departments.
