PORT HURON When he retired as teacher at St. Clair County Community College in December 1979, Clarence E. Scott was lauded for his keen intellect, his charm and his love for his job. The feeling was not lost on his students who, Mr. Scott died Thursday in Port Huron one teacher said, adored him. Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was 63.

Mr. Scott, a teacher all of his life, moved to Port Huron with his wife, Helen, in 1965.

He had accepted a job as a English teacher at the college and, during the next 14 years, plunged into his classes - Shakespeare, American literature , composition - with vigor. In a tribute written to him in Patterns, the college's creative writing magazine, Mr. Scott was well-portrayed: "If there is indeed a difference between wit and humor, then it can be said that Mr. Scott had a surplus of both. Whether he was attacking the dangling participle, seeking the misplaced apostrophe, exploring a profound passage of Shakespeare, or expanding the vocabulary limits of his students, he put the whole force of his unusual ability to it.

Mr. Scott, of 3249 Pine Grove Ave., was born Jan. 25, 1918, in Torrington, Conn. He served as a sergeant with the U.S. Army Air Corp in the South Pacific during World War II.

He married Helen D. Dean July 20, 1946 in Fort Wayne, Ind.. They moved to Port Huron in 1965 and attended the First Presbyterian Church. Mr. Scott is survived by his wife; two sons, Michael D., Dearborn Heights, and John L., Midland; one daughter, Jean L., Kalamazoo; three grandchildren; and one brother, John A., Cocoa Beach, Fla.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Arthur Smith Funeral Homes-North Chapel. The Rev. Ronald L. Naylor, pastor of the First United Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Pallbearers will be John and Michael Scott, Gary Rhody, James Kelly, Clarence Wade and Thomas Mooney. Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Michigan Heart Fund.
