Elizabeth “Betty” Newton Hatch

Elizabeth "Betty" N. Hatch, 95, passed away at 9:24 PM Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at Sanctuary at Holy Cross, South Bend. Mrs. Hatch taught music for the Mishawaka School Corporation at Mary Phillips and Battell Schools, retiring in 1972.
She was born on May 27, 1918 in South Bend, IN to the late Robert Orville and Cressie June (Davis) Newton. She lived 15 years in Connecticut and most of her life in South Bend. On June 19, 1953 in South Bend, IN she married Robert G. Hatch, who preceded her in death on September 16, 2012.
Betty is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, William "Bill" and Constance Butler of South Bend; one grandson, Thomas Butler of Elkhart; and three grandchildren, Olivia and twins, Andrew and Abigail.
Betty earned her Bachelor and Master Degrees in Music at the University of Michigan. Betty honed her musical skills on a variety of Early Music instruments. She was a member of the National Viola da Gamba Society of America and was a secretary of the South Bend Recorder Society. When living in Connecticut, Betty toured Italy performing with a Yale University Early Music group.
She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, South Bend. Betty held membership with Elks, Progress Club, American Association of University Women, Missionary Circle, Newcomers Club, South Bend Symphony, and was a secretary of the Art League.
