Hildred Widener, 84, residing on Widener Lane, South Bend, Ind., passed away peacefully Sunday morning, Feb. 3, in her home. She was born Jan. 28, 1918, in South Bend, as the daughter of Isaac Frank and Lillie (Palmer) Miller, and had been a lifelong resident of this community.

On Feb. 2, 1940, in South Bend, as Hildred Miller, she married Harold C. Widener, who passed away Sept. 3, 1984. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Powell and Joyce Miller; two brothers, Richmond Miller and Vernon Miller, and by a baby brother.

She is survived by two daughters, Constance Gail Widener of Forest Lakes, Ariz., and Christine Anne Widener of Tucson, Ariz.; a son and daughter-in-law, Harold C. and Sandy Widener Jr. of Heber Springs, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Corey Eremea, Aaron Widener and Jason Widener; a great-grandson, Blake Eremea; a sister and brother-in-law, Carol and James Braden of South Bend; and by a brother, Victor Miller of South Bend.

Mrs. Widener served for 24 years as Centre Township Assessor, and was the former owner of Widener Shoe Store in South Bend. She was a lifelong member of River Park United Methodist Church, a member and past president of the Ladies Auxiliary of Avalon Grotto, member and Past Worthy Matron of the former Order of Eastern Star Chapter 2, member of Order of Eastern Star Chapter 479, Lakeville, Ind., past president of the Indiana Assessors Association, a board member of the International Assessor's Association, and was a member of the Phi Beta Psi Sorority.

Services for Mrs. Widener will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Palmer Funeral Home, 2528. Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend. Rev. Phil Abram, pastor of River Park United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, Ind. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today in the Palmer Funeral Home.
