Patrick James "Jim" McCartney

SOUTH BEND - Patrick James "Jim" McCartney, 78, of St. Paul's Retirement Community, formerly of 1626 E. McKinley Ave., died at 8:20 p.m. Thursday in St. Joseph's Medical Center.
Born May 5, 1918, in South Bend, he graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1939 and worked as a chemist at Ball Band, now Uniroyal. Mr. McCartney was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and was a member of the Altar Society.
Survivors in include a stepniece, June (Edward) Prein of Grand Rapids, Mich.; a stepnephew, William (Janelle) Schubmehl of Avon Lake, Ohio; and five stepgreat-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Anne Schubmehhl, Mary Aline and Marge McCartney, as well as his brothers, Rev. Joseph McCartney, CSC, and Gerald McCartney.
Friends called Sunday, Feb. 16, from 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the McGann Funeral Homes, University Area Chapel, 2313 E. Edison Ad., where a parish Vigil Service was held at 4 p.m. The Funeral Mass was held at 10 a.m. today in St. Joseph Catholic Church. Memorial donations may be made to the church
