LAFAYETTE. Ind. (AP) A 4-year-old Illinois girl and her grandmother died of smoke inhalation early this morning when fire struck their West Lafayette home. The woman's 13-year-old daughter, her nightclothes blackened by heavy smoke, ran from the burning, two-story house and alerted neighbors who called firemen. Killed were Eileen Wright, 48, and young Schwegal, daughter of Don Karena Schwegal of Elgin, Ill.

The girl had been visiting her grandmother. Mrs. Wright's daughter, Debbie, who alerted the neighbors, was treated and released at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lafayette. The woman's body was found on the downstairs floor six feet from the back door.

The girl's body was discovered in an upstairs hallway. Firemen said it appeared the girl started down the stairs, then returned upstairs. The blaze started in the kitchen while the three apparently were sleeping, firemen said, but it was not known what caused the blaze. The Wright home is on the east edge of the Purdue University campus.
