Helen Maxine (Gaff) Staley
April 30, 1919 – Jan. 31, 2007
ELKHART — H. Maxine Staley, 87, died at 5:25 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, in her home. She was born April 30, 1919, in Chicago, IL, to the late Emmet and Maude (Kreighbaum) Gaff. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Robert Gaff.
She was employed at the former St. Joseph Valley Bank in Elkhart. She retired in 1980 from the Midwest Commerce Baking Company, where she worked in the mortgage loan department. She was a member of the former Simpson United Methodist Church (Now Faith United Methodist Church). Maxine enjoyed gardening and caring for her pet birds.
On May 24, 1945, in South Bend, she married Walter A. “Walt” Staley, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Patricia Virrill of Elkhart; a granddaughter, Megan M. (Ben) Wiginton of South Bend; a great-grandson, Murphy Wiginton of South Bend; four step-grandchildren;and several step great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today, Feb. 3, in Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home, with Rev. Larry W. Kurtz, Faith United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola. Friends called from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
