Philip was the biological son of Ethel's first husband, Chester Daniel Slabaugh. After his parents divorced and Ethel married William Freeman, he was perhaps adopted by William, or at least chose to use the Freeman surname. In the 1930 census he is still listed as Philip Slabaugh. By 1940 he is listed as Philip Freeman.
