Frances June Stamp, 88, died Tuesday, May 9, in Buchanan Meadows in Buchanan, MI. She was born in South Bend on November 24, 1917, to Vernon and Ruth (Seltzer) Cormican. On March 15, 1941, Frances married Robert Stamp and had one child, Dennis.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Beverly Sabin; her husband, Robert; and her son, Dennis.

Frances is survived by her granddaughter, Heather Frances Stamp of Chicago, IL; her daughter-in-law and friend, Gretchen Stamp of Cassopolis, MI; her brother, Richard (Marie) Cormican of Bristol, IN; and her sister, Carol (Bud) Barney of Vero Beach, FL.

Frances attended the South Bend Public Schools and earned her college degree from Indiana State in 1940. She then began her teaching career in Indiana’s rural one- room school, but later moved with her husband to Cassopolis, MI, where she had been a lifelong resident. As a first-grade teacher in Michigan schools, Frances taught hundreds of children to read. In January 1980 she retired to enjoy the pleasures of travel but continued teaching, and reading to adults as a volunteer for the Cass County Literacy program.
