John Granville Brumbaugh

BRUMBAUGH, JOHN GRANVILLE died peacefully on March 24 at the age of 95 at East Ridge Retirement Community. John was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 1, 1919 to John Calvin Brumbaugh and Essie Baker Brumbaugh. He was raised in South Bend, Indiana where he became the youngest Eagle Scout in the state of Indiana. He graduated from Wabash College in 1940. In 1941 he joined the Navy and trained as a naval aviator in Pensacola, Florida.

After Pearl Harbor he married his hometown sweetheart Annie Lee Moore "Mike" on Christmas Eve, 1941. In 1942, John joined Pan American Grace Airways and flew for 12 years as a Captain out of Lima, Peru. They moved to Coral Gables in 1954 with their two children. John retired as a Captain with Braniff Airways in l979. John and Mike traveled the world extensively visiting 127 countries and enjoyed their summers in Fraser, Colorado.

John was predeceased by his wife, his brothers Dale and Paul, and his daughter in law Caroline P. Brumbaugh.

He is survived by his son John M. Brumbaugh, his daughter Dale Dowlen (Dr. Lon), and his brother James Brumbaugh. He took great pride in his 6 grandchildren: John Patterson Brumbaugh (Ann), Dr. David Brumbaugh (Carrie), Christine Dowlen VonWyl (Jimmy), Katie Brumbaugh Newcomm (Dr. Phillip), Buddy Dowlen (Lauren), Carrie Brumbaugh Shelfer (Scott). He is also survived by 16 great grandchildren.

He was fondly known as "Gentleman John" and will be sorely missed by all.

A memorial service will be held on April 26, 2014 at 11 AM at St. Thomas Episcopal Church at 5690 North Kendall Drive, Coral Gables, Florida
