Local men were among the glider troops which held off two nazi divisions during beach landlings on D-day, according to a press release from the European theater of operations. Sergt. William E. Bergman, 1046 Diamond avenue, who received the Purple Heart upon being wounded and is back in action SBT 08/31/1944

SERVICE SUNDAY FOR BERGMAN
Memorial services for Sergt. William Edward Bergman, who was killed in action Sept. 30 in Holland, will be held at 3:30 p. m. Sunday in the Evangelical Covlenant church, Monroe street. Rev. Ralph L. Erickson, pastor of the church, will officiate. An honor guard from St. Joseph county airport will be present.
His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Peterson, 1113 Birner street. The family has purchased a memorial which will be dedicated at the service. Members and friends are contributing to the servicemen's memorial organ fund of Sergt. Bergman's home church. SBT 12/07/1944
