Charles Douglas Baillie, 84, of Bradbury, Calif., passed away Saturday, Nov. 16, after a brief illness.

He was born Sept. 12, 1918, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to the late Reverend Charles T. and Nina (Vincent) Baillie, and spent much of his early life in South Bend, Ind., graduating from South Bend Central High School in 1936 and Indiana University in 1940.

On Feb. 15, 1941, he married Helene Elizabeth Kuehn in South Bend. The ceremony performed by his father, Reverend Charles T. Baillie, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. She died on April 8, 1979.

On Oct. 22, 1982, he married Nancy Lee Anderson in San Marino, Calif. She survives. He is also survived by his children, Barbara A. (John) Obenchain of South Bend, C. Douglas Baillie Jr. of San Francisco, Calif., and Nancy H. (Michael) Malke of Sugarland, Texas; seven grandchildren, John (Sandra) Obenchain Jr. of Piscataway, N.J., Cheryl (John) Padula of Downers Grove, Ill., Deborah, Richard, Michael and Laura Obenchain of South Bend, and Jared Malke of Sugarland; and three great-grandchildren, Cimonne Helene and Robert Maxwell Padula, and Alexander Nicholas Obenchain; and by a sister, Phyllis Baillie Dunlap of South Bend.

Charles started his career at Continental Illinois Bank of Chicago in 1940. In 1941 he began service in the U.S. Navy during World War I1, earning the rank of lieutenant.

In 1952 he joined National Discount Financial Company in South Bend and was vice president. The Baillie family moved from South Bend to California in 1954 where Charles worked at United California Bank until 1975. He retired as executive vice president. He then went to Manufacturers Bank in 1976 and retired in 1989 as senior vice president and director. Charles was devoted to his family and ensured that they all got together in California during the summer.

He loved playing golf with his friends, and he was internationally recognized for his Bing Crosby memorabilia collection. He was active in his community, and in the past served on the San Marino City Council, was a member of Rotary International, served in the San Marino Community Church, and was a member of the San Gabriel Country Club. Charles also gave generously to many charities.

Memorial services for Charles will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27, in the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William Street, South Bend. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place in California, and burial will be at Highland Cemetery, South Bend.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
