Albert C. Zornig

Albert Charles Zornig, 73, of South Bend, died at home Friday evening after an extended illness. Mr. Zornig was born Nov. 18, 1923, in Chicago, Ill. He moved to South Bend in 1939, and attended Central High School where he met his future bride, Virginia Ruth Filbey Zornig, "Ginger", who survives him. After graduation, he enrolled at Purdue University, Lafayette. In 1943, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving with the 4th Division at the battles of Iwo Jima, Saipan and Tinian.
After military service, Al and Ginger returned to South Bend and he went to work at Drewry's. He was there 25 years until its closing in 1972. He then went to work at AM General as a traffic expeditor where he remained until his retirement in 1987. Never known to sit still for long, Al soon took a part-time job managing Club 23 with his dear friend Mahmoud A. Hussein.
He spent most mornings there, until eight months ago when his health no longer allowed
Al and "Ginger" had four children, Fredrick Robert Zornig, who preceded him in death, Cheryl V. James of Granger, Albert G. Zornig of Mishawaka, and Carole L. Niven of South Bend. Also surviving is his stepmother, Edith M. Zornig of Mishawaka; his sister, Marie (Mitzi) C. Meilner of South Bend; his brother, Robert Albert Zornig of Tempe, Ariz.; a brother-in-law, Robert A. Filbey of Estes Park, Colo.; and a sister-in-law, Lorraine A. Kravig of Columbus, Ohio. Mr.
Zornig's quick wit and ready smile were the source of great pleasure to his family a and friends. He had 10 grandchildren, Dawn Marie James who preceded him in death, Steffanie L. Prior of Elkhart, Wiliam Paul James of South Bend, Albert F. James of Granger, Stephen A. Zornig of South Bend, Brian P.
Zornig of South Bend, Alexander M. Zornig of Mishawaka, Alisa S. Zornig of I Mishawaka, Deanna D. Kozlowski of South Bend, and Bruce 1 A. "Tony" Smith of South Bend; as well as six great-grandchildren.
Mr. Zornig was affiliated with the Masonic Order 294. He belonged to the Scottish Rite, and the Shrine Order of the Orak Temple. Services will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to Shriner's Crippled Children's Hospital, or the American Heart Assocation.
Guisinger Colonial Chapel Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
