Martin E. White

Nov. 5, 1922 - March 30, 2005

Martin E. White, 82, residing on Carlton Street, Mishawaka, passed away at 4:10 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, 2005, in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend.

He was born November 5, 1922, in South Bend, to Charles H. and Sadie M. (Leister) White, and had remained a lifelong resident of this community. He retired in 1984 as a machinist with Wheelabrator-Frye, Inc. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II in the 526th Ordnance Heavy Maintenance Tank Company, earned five bronze stars and the Victory Medal, and was in the battles at Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was honorably discharged on December 4, 1945, following three years of service. Mr.

White is survived by his daughter, Kathrynmary (Joel) Schultz of Osceola; his son, John Martin (Shelly) White of South Bend; his grandson, James Andrew Schultz, and Michael and Brandon, who called him "Pops." Also surviving are his sister, Betty Fetters of Normal, IL, and a brother, Richard White of Sebring, FL.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Delia Horning and Elizabeth S. White; and nine brothers, Laverne, Arthur, Donald, Walter, Noble, Miles, Ernest, Max and Roy White.

Martin was a 1942 graduate of South Bend Central High School, was a member of American Legion Post 161, Mishawaka, the St. Joseph Club in South Bend, and enjoyed fishing.

The family would like to express a special thank you to Hospice of St. Joseph County, St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, and to the student nurses of Ivy Tech for their wonderful care on Martin's behalf. Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 2, in Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend.

Rev. Gilbert Washington will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Highland Cemetery where members of American Legion Post 161 will conduct military honors. The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday in the Palmer Funeral Home-River Park.
