Vonda Fae Wood
Nov. 7, 1923 - Aug. 5, 2006
Vonda Fae Wood, 82, of South Bend, passed away peacefully at 9:10 p.m. Saturday, August 5, 2006, in Saint Joseph Care Center-West surrounded by her family.
Vonda was born November 7, 1923, in South Bend, as the daughter of Worthy A. and Flossie (Petty) Shadel, and had remained a lifelong resident. On February 21, 1948, in South Bend, she married Arthur E. Wood, who passed away in October 1968.
Her husband was the owner-operator of Gene Wood Refrigeration Service and Vonda assisted him with the office work. She later was employed as bookkeeper at Sobol Plastics in South Bend from which she retired. Following retirement, she worked in the mail room for Holy Cross Shared Services and St. Mary's campus. Vonda was a longtime member of South Side Church of God where she served as pianist for many years. She also played for children's church and for many holiday programs. On Saturday evenings the family would gather for a songfest, and she always enjoyed that time with her children, her two sisters, and her nieces and nephews. She always felt blessed that the Lord gave her the talent to play the piano, and she always wanted to use that talent to bless others and share God's love.
Vonda is survived by two daughters, Linda and Dennis Mitschelen of Mishawaka, and Patricia Merrill of South Bend; and a son, Dennis and Connie Wood of Mishawaka. Also surviving are seven grandchildren whom she adored, Aubrey Merrill, Brandon Merrill, Angela Wood, Valerie Wood, Hannah Wood, Holly Mitschelen and Andrew Mitschelen. Two sisters, Waneta and Alvin Morrical of South Bend, and Ann and Jerry Brownbridge of Osceola, survive her as well, along with many nieces and nephews.
Services celebrating the life on Vonda Wood will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 9, in South Side Church of God, 7351 U.S. 31 South, South Bend. Rev. Greg Crump will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola. The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. today in the Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend, and one hour prior to services Wednesday in the church.
Contributions in memory of Vonda Fae Wood may be made to South Side Church of God, 7351 U.S. 31 South, South Bend, IN 46614.
