Edward T. Schmanski, 64, of 1125 Academy Place, died at 10:15 a.m. Sunday in Memorial Hospital. Mr. Schmanski retired in 1985 as a machinist for Bendix Corp. after 42 years of employment. He was born July 17, 1924, in Chicago and had lived in South Bend most of his life after coming here from Chicago.

On Oct. 4, 1947, in South Bend, he married Therese Buczkowski, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Peggy Cota of LaPorte; two sons, John and Robert, both of South Bend; eight grandchildren; a sister, Helen Pecze of South Bend; and a brother, Leo of Mishawaka.

He was a veteran of World War II, a member of the church and a member of Bendix Local 9 of the United Auto Workers union. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Cross Catholic Church. Burial will be in St.

Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Kaniewski & Sons Funeral Home, where members of Holy Cross Catholic Church will recite the rosary at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Riley Children's Hospital, Indianapolis
