Lorraine A. (Quick) Nichols

Lorraine A. Nichols, 77, of Moline, Ill., died on Monday, Nov. 13, in her home. Lorraine Alta Quick was born on Aug: 6, 1923, in South Bend, Ind., the daughter of the late Ivan and Ida Kurzhals Quick. She married James A. Nichols on June 29, 1958 in South Bend. He died on May 21, 1988.
Lorraine was a graduate of Northwestern University with additional studies at Michigan State and Augustana College, Rock Island, Ill. She taught vocal music for K-12th grade in South Haven, Mich., from 1947-1952. She later was the Assistant Vocal Music Coordinator for Moline Public Schools for 30 years and retired in 1982. 1 Lorraine was a member of Delta Omicron Music Sorority and a member of Union Congregational Church where she had been a former choir director and had served on many committees. She was a member of Order of The Eastern Star, Grand Cross of Rainbow Girls, I.E.A. and N.E.A., and was a past president of Retired Teachers Association.
She was an avid Cardinal fan and loved going to Spring training after retirement permitted. Lorraine took the Moline Summer Youth Chorus to Chicagoland Music Festival at Soldiers Field in 1953 and from that experience with the match-lighting ceremony began the use of flashlights to make flags at the 6th grade Festival at Wharten Field House in later years. In addition to love of music she was also an avid sports fan having traveled to the Rose Bowl game with Northwestern in 1949. She and her husband Jim traveled extensively including a trip around the world in 1968, the Orient in 1972 and Hawaii in 1974. She also celebrated her 40th birthday in Bermuda.
She is survived by a nephew, John C. Ridenour of South Bend; two nieces, Jill Ridenour of South Bend and Judi Ridenour of Ocoee, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Judith Qualls of Devon, Pa.; a granddaughter, Kristin Qualls of Devon; three great nephews; two great-nieces; and by two great-great nieces and two great-great nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. today, Nov. 18, at the Union Congregational Church, Moline. There will be no visitation. The body has been cremated and interment will be at Iberia Cemetery, Iberia, Ohio. Memorials may be made to the church. The Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd., is in charge of arrangements.
