John E. O'Hara

John E. O'Hara, 100, passed away in peace, on July 26, 2023. He was born on February 10, 1923, in Mishawaka, Indiana. John was a cherished son of the late Edward and Regina (Bailey) O'Hara.

John will be lovingly remembered by his family. He was a devoted father to his five children, Timothy O'Hara of Indianapolis, IN, Anne Toth (Robert) of Middlebury, IN, Scott O'Hara (Carol McSheffrey) of Westborough, MA, Brigid Darden (Timothy) of Naperville, IL, and John O'Hara (Ann) of Waukesha, WI. John was a proud and loving grandfather to twelve grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. He is survived by his sister, Kathleen Hartwig (Quentin) of Indiana, PA, and was a dear uncle to many nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Kathryn (Katie) O'Hara, his brothers, James (Jim) and William (Bill) O'Hara, and his parents Edward (Ed) and Regina (Bailey) O’Hara.

John was a US Army veteran who served our country in World War II. He fought in Okinawa with the 1st Rocket Battalion. Earlier in the war he was stationed in Santa Monica, CA where he attended UCLA to study radar. While in California he danced with Hollywood starlets at the Hollywood Canteen.

John's professional life was marked by a remarkable spirit of entrepreneurship, dedication, and humor. He co-owned and operated the successful Lazzara & O'Hara Avenue Soft Water business for 40 years, providing high-quality water conditioning services to the community. In addition, he had a fulfilling career in quality control at the Bendix Corporation, South Bend, IN, where he worked diligently for 35 years. John's hard work, integrity, and commitment to excellence left an indelible mark on those who had the pleasure of knowing and working with him.

Visitation will be held 4pm-7pm Friday, August 4, 2023, with a rosary at 6pm at Palmer Funeral Home-Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, IN 46635. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am Saturday, August 5, 2023 at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 1050 Wilber Street, South Bend, IN 46628. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery, 2257 Portage Avenue, South Bend, IN 46616.

Memorial donations in remembrance of John O’Hara may be made to Holy Cross Catholic Church, 920 Wilber Street, South Bend, IN 46628; or the American Heart Association at heart.org. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com.
